Holiday stress? Move it out!

Hello Bodi's!

Here is something to think about this holiday season. . .

Research shows that 80% of women find the holidays to be "moderately or severely stressful". These months are filled with parties, house guests & gift buying galore. It is no wonder that we get overwhelmed. When overwhelmed, food often lends us comfort. All too often we fall into this temptation and find ourselves carrying some extra pounds by the time a new year rolls around.

Movement Melts Away Stress
As much as it may stress you out just to think about exercising, once you actually start working out, you'll experience less stress in every part of your life.
"Exercise produces a relaxation response that serves as a positive distraction," says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. He says it also helps elevate your mood and keep depression at bay.
You're not the only person who will benefit from more happiness and less stress in your life. When you're less stressed, you're less irritable, Atkinson says -- and that could improve relationships with your partner, kids, and co-workers.

Exercise Gives You Energy
You might be surprised at how, say, popping in a workout tape for 30 minutes in the morning can change your whole day. When endorphins are released into your bloodstream during exercise, "you feel much more energized the rest of the day."
And when you improve your strength and stamina, it's easier to accomplish everyday tasks like carrying groceries and climbing stairs. This also helps you feel more energetic over the course of the day.
A common excuse among clients is that they're too tired to exercise. While exercise may make you feel more tired at first, he says, that won't last long.
The physical tiredness you feel after working out isn't the same as everyday fatigue. Besides, once your body adjusts to exercise, you'll have more energy than ever.

Exercise Lets You Eat More
Pound for pound, muscle burns more calories at rest than body fat. So the more muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate. And, of course, you also burn calories while you're actually exercising.
All this means that "cheating" with a cookie once in a while isn't going to take you back 10 steps. "Can you eat anything? No. "But you can afford to enjoy some of the things you really like when you exercise regularly. You can better get away with those things in moderation than you can when you're not working out."

Jump-start your week, and your metabolism with a medicine ball!

Good morning Bodi's, It is Monday!

The first day of the work week can be one of the most difficult days to get motivated for a work out.
The solution: Keep it simple. The less thought you have to put into your workout, the more likely  you are to do it.

Here is an entire workout you can do without even leaving your house. You will only need one piece of equipment. I incorporate at least one of these medicine ball exercises into every routine I design. These movements allow almost every muscle in your body to be targeted and build not only strength but also, flexibility. Here are a few of my favorites:

The Woodchopper – Start with your feet spread approximately shoulder width apart. Hold the ball high over head with both hands. Bring the ball down swinging it like an axe, coming between your legs. Maintain control all through the swing, not allowing yourself to get wildly out of control. Go back to the top position and repeat until you have done 20 reps.
The Squat Press – Hold the ball in front of you at chest level with both hands. Bend deeply at the knees. Now quickly stand to an upright position while extending both arms high about your head. The movement looks very similar to shooting a basketball. Do 20 reps.
Weighted Ab Crunches – Using the medicine ball for weight on your chest, do abdominal crunches lifting your head and shoulders. Do a minimum of 20 reps.
Seated Twist – Sit down on the floor with your legs in front of you. Holding the ball extended directly in front of you twist your body slowly side to side. Go as far as your range of motion allows. Do 20 reps to each side.
Toe Touches – Lying on your back bring your legs up to a 90 degree angle. With the ball held straight out behind you on the floor, lift with your arms and shoulders bringing the ball up to touch your toes. This one will give you a great burn. Do 20 reps.
Circles Swings – One of the most basic of the medicine ball workouts movements is the circle. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Hold the ball in both hands, down in front of your. Now with complete control bring the ball in a full circle going to the left. Once you are at the bottom reverse and go to the right. Complete 20 reps in both directions.
These exercises are simple movements that have added resistance due to the addition of the medicine ball. The movements should be easy on your joints and not add an uncomfortable amount of stress to your body. Let me know what you think or feel free to ask me any questions you may have!

Interval Training

Hi Bodi's!

We are gearing up for the Central Coast Cancer Challenge run this weekend and are so excited to be a part of this event! Look for pictures and video next week. I love the energy at events like this one and have a huge appreciation for the cause behind this event. Whether you walk, run or bike, you are supporting a great cause. I think a lot of people would benefit from an experience like this, but are intimidated by the fitness aspect of it. Here are some details of our Bodi-fit training system that may help you get ready for the next run, jog or walk :)

To prepare our team for the run we train using the Interval training method.

Interval training is a way of doing cardio that will give you the ability to make gains in time and distance much more easily than any other method. The principle of interval training is that you push yourself really hard and then you slow down.

This repetitive form of training leads to your body needing to adapt to changes and this is really great for you. The body begins to build new capillaries, and is better able to take in and deliver oxygen to the working muscles. Muscles develop a higher tolerance to the build-up of lactate, and the heart muscle is strengthened. These changes result in improved performance particularly within the cardiovascular system.

When people begin running they automatically do interval training where they will alternate walking and running to get a better workout in. As people get better at running they will start just running and not stopping until the 30 or 60 minute run is over. The upside of this is that you will get a much better workout and feel fantastically exhausted at the end, the downside of interval training is that you are going to be pushing your comfort zone so the workout itself is going to be painful.

Here is how you can make it work for you:
When you begin running as I said before you are going to have trouble running for any length of time so you decide that you are going for 20 minutes and you will do cycles of jogging for 30 seconds and then walking for 30 seconds. As you get better at running you will be able to jog for one minute and then walk for 30 seconds. You will notice that your rest stays the same but the running time increases until you get to the point that you do not need a rest for your 30 minute run.

As an advanced runner you are not going to slow down for a walk but instead your will run for 5 minutes and then break into a spring for 30 seconds or a minute and then slow back down to your regular pace. As another way to do interval training you can go to another location that is more hilly and use the uphills to change up your pace. The hills are going to force you push harder to keep the same pace and of course the downhills are going to use different muscles but as far as exertion goes you will find the running easier.
GIve it a try and let me know how you like this training system! If you'd like to join our training group contact us at info@bodibybobbbie.com or (707)291-9470

Move of the week- Ab Workout Video

Hello Bodi's!

Here is your move of the week.

Try this one in 15 second intervals if you are just starting a fitness routine.
Try to touch your knee to your elbow each time. If you are not able to stay in form, take a rest and then start right up again.
Increase the difficulty level by lengthening your interval time. Also, you can shorten the rest time between sets.

Let me know how you like this Move of the week. It is one of my favorites :)

Special thanks to my fabulous fitness model, and client, Hannah!

Happy toning and safe tanning!!!
